Arium AE Contributes to the Development of UMD Quantum Research Center
Arium AE is thrilled to share that we are leading the expansion of quantum research in Maryland by providing comprehensive design services for the University of Maryland’s new quantum research center.
Located in the Discovery District at College Park, this project underscores Arium’s leadership in advanced educational and technical environments across the Mid-Atlantic region.
The Capital of Quantum initiative is a public-private partnership with the State of Maryland, the University of Maryland College Park, and private partners to generate more than $1 billion in investments in Maryland’s quantum industry.
According to a recent press release from Maryland’s Governor, since launching the Capital of Quantum Initiative this year, Maryland has welcomed nearly a dozen quantum startups to the Discovery District’s diverse network of quantum innovators.
Under the project management of the University of Maryland Enterprise Corporation, the 14,000 square-foot laboratory, office, and research center will provide early access to quantum technology to support collaborative hardware and software development, academic institutions, and quantum companies. As noted in the governor’s press release, it is expected that the center will also attract skilled quantum experts to the state, providing a space for engineers to interact and collaborate with the Maryland quantum ecosystem, including University of Maryland students and researchers.
The Discovery District at the University of Maryland is rapidly emerging as a hub for quantum research and innovation, including hosting entities like the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) and the Maryland Institute for Quantum Applications (MIQA). MIQA and ARLIS are one of the 15 University Affiliated Research Centers in the country designated by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Arium’s experience with government and defense-related projects allows us to effectively contribute to the development of facilities that align with the Discovery District’s focus on quantum technologies and national security applications. Our integrated design team has successfully delivered secure and technically complex environments, including chemical and biological laboratories, data centers, clean rooms, testing areas, and support spaces. Our approach ensures that architectural aesthetics, engineering systems, and interior functionalities are seamlessly integrated, which is crucial for the complex requirements of quantum laboratories.
Brian Frels, Principal at Arium AE, stated, “We are honored to be a part of this exciting project that will showcase Maryland as a global leader in quantum technology and innovation.”
