Arium AE is leading the expansion of quantum research in Maryland by providing comprehensive design services for new quantum labs.
Arium AE is the architect of record for the University of Maryland Quantum Labs Center, a 14,000 SF facility under construction in the Discovery District at College Park. Completing this fall, the center includes dedicated quantum computing labs, office spaces, and a multipurpose teaching room with infrastructure supporting four immediate and seven future quantum computing machines. It is a cornerstone of the Capital of Quantum initiative, a state and private sector collaboration targeting over $1 billion in quantum industry investment in Maryland. We were also recently awarded a second quantum project: a 4,243 SF lab and office fit-out for a technology company, also in the Discovery District. We’re working directly with UMD and tenant consultants to coordinate the complex MEP and infrastructure requirements these systems demand. Having architecture, MEP engineering, and interior design under one roof compresses schedules, eliminates coordination gaps, and keeps technically complex projects on track.
This is not a standard lab fit-out. Quantum computing facilities require precision in vibration isolation, EMI shielding, cryogenic systems support, and cleanroom adjacency planning. Our experience in SCIF and high-security facility design delivers the technical rigor that classified and sensitive research clients require.
The Discovery District at the University of Maryland is rapidly emerging as a hub for quantum research and innovation, including hosting entities like the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) and the Maryland Institute for Quantum Applications (MIQA). MIQA and ARLIS are one of the 15 University Affiliated Research Centers in the country designated by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Arium’s experience with government and defense projects enables us to contribute effectively to developing facilities aligned with the Discovery District’s focus on quantum technologies and national security applications. Our integrated design team has successfully delivered secure and technically complex environments, including chemical and biological laboratories, data centers, clean rooms, testing areas, and support spaces. Our approach ensures that architectural aesthetics, engineering systems, and interior functionality are seamlessly integrated, which is crucial to meet the complex requirements of quantum laboratories.
Brian Frels, Principal at Arium AE, stated, “We are honored to be a part of these exciting projects that will showcase Maryland as a global leader in quantum technology and innovation.”
